How a VCE exam is actually built

Almost everything that makes VCE exams hard is structural, and none of it is secret. Knowing the shape of the paper before you sit one is worth more than another week of content revision.

Most subjects run two written exams

They are not two halves of the same paper. Each has its own conditions and its own kind of question, and students who prepare for one shape and meet the other lose marks they had the knowledge to earn.

Marks are printed beside every question

A three-mark question wants three creditable things. Writing two of them beautifully still scores two. Reading the mark allocation as an instruction — rather than a hint about difficulty — is the single fastest change most students can make.

Reading time comes before writing time

It is not spare time. Used properly it is where you decide the order to answer in and spot the questions that will take longest, so that nothing expensive is met for the first time with twenty minutes left.

Reference material is provided where it is provided

Some subjects give a formula sheet or data book in the exam. Memorising what is handed to you is wasted effort, and not knowing your way around it costs minutes you cannot spare.

Marking your own paper is the point, not a shortcut

Every written question here sits beside a model answer and the marks it carries, and you award the marks yourself. That sounds like less than being marked. It is more, and it is the reason these papers exist in this form.

An examiner reading your work decides whether each required idea is present. Doing that to your own answer forces you to look at what you actually wrote rather than what you meant, and the gap between the two is where most lost marks live. A student who has marked thirty of their own answers has learnt what "explain" is worth against "describe" far better than one who was handed a number thirty times.

Be strict. A mark you award yourself for something an examiner would not find is a mark you will lose again in November, having practised believing you had it.

What a practice exam is for

A practice paper is a diagnosis, not a score. The number at the end is the least useful thing it produces — it says how the morning went, not what to do on Monday.

The useful output is the sorted pile of wrong answers: the ones you knew and rushed, the ones you half-knew and guessed, and the ones you genuinely could not do. Only the third pile is a content problem, and it is usually smaller than it feels. The first two are habits, and habits change faster than knowledge.

Sit papers under time from the start. A paper done in ninety minutes when it allows sixty tells you nothing about a subject whose difficulty is mostly the clock.

Study scores, scaling and what the number means

A study score reports how you did against everyone in the state who took that subject, on a scale set so that 30 is around the middle and roughly the top and bottom few per cent sit beyond 40 and below 20. It is a rank expressed as a number, not a percentage of marks.

Scaling then adjusts subjects against each other, because a study score of 35 in one subject and 35 in another did not require the same standard against the same field. This is done for you by VTAC and there is nothing to game: the honest advice is that a subject you will work at beats a subject picked for its scaling, every time.

The exam dates, the study designs and the scaling report all belong to VCAA and VTAC and change from year to year. We do not restate them here — a stale date on a study site is worse than none.

Common questions

How are the answers marked?

Multiple choice is marked for you. Written answers are shown beside a model response and the official mark allocation, and you award the marks yourself. That sounds like less, but marking your own work against a model is the fastest way to learn what an examiner is actually looking for.

Are these real VCAA exams?

No. They are practice papers written to the same structure — questions in parts, each carrying marks — so that sitting one feels like sitting the real thing. Past VCAA exams are free on the VCAA site and are worth doing as well.

How much practice is enough?

More useful than counting papers is what you do after each one. A paper you have marked yourself, question by question, and gone back over is worth several you sat and filed away.

When are the VCE exams held?

In the second half of the year, with the timetable published by VCAA each year. We do not repeat the dates here because they move, and a stale date on a study site is worse than none.

Do I need to memorise formulas?

Not the ones you are given. Several subjects provide a formula sheet or data book in the exam, and time spent memorising what will be handed to you is time not spent learning to use it quickly. Knowing your way around the sheet is worth more than knowing it by heart.

What is a good study score?

30 sits around the middle of everyone who took the subject, and the scale is built that way rather than being a percentage of marks. What counts as good depends entirely on where you want the score to take you, which is a VTAC question rather than an exam question.

Should I pick subjects that scale well?

Pick subjects you will work at. Scaling adjusts for how hard a subject's field was, so it rewards doing well rather than choosing well, and a subject endured for its scaling usually returns a worse score than one that was enjoyed.
