Year 4 Opportunity Class test practice
The Opportunity Class test is the first selective assessment most children meet, and it is unlike anything in a Year 4 classroom. It does not ask what has been taught. It asks a child to reason — to follow an argument, notice the step that does not hold, and resist the answer that merely sounds right. Almost every child finds the thinking-skills questions strange at first, which is precisely why exposure matters more here than in any NAPLAN year.

Worth knowing at this level
Thinking skills cannot be revised, only recognised. The gain comes from meeting enough of the question shapes that none of them is new on the day.
Common questions
- What is the Opportunity Class test?
- A placement test for Opportunity Class entry, sat in Year 4. It covers reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Current dates and application details are published by the education authority, and we do not repeat them here because they change.
- How is it different from NAPLAN?
- NAPLAN checks what a child has been taught; this test sorts candidates. The questions are written to separate them, so they are short to read, take several steps to solve, and every option stays defensible until you look closely.
- Can a child prepare for thinking skills at all?
- Not by studying, but yes by practising. The questions reuse a limited set of underlying shapes, and a child who has worked through enough of them starts recognising which kind is in front of them — which is most of the battle.
