Year 5 NAPLAN practice tests

Year 5 is where the questions start asking for two things at once. A numeracy question no longer says what operation to use; a reading passage runs long enough that a child has to hold the start of it in mind while answering about the end. Children who coasted through Year 3 on quick recall often find this the first year that rewards working carefully instead of working fast. That shift is worth practising deliberately, because it does not arrive on its own.

The 3 sections, with questions you can try now

Each one explains what it asks of a child at this year level and gives you real questions from our papers with worked answers. No account needed.

Writing is the fourth section — all freeIt has no answer key, so it is marked against ten criteria. Here is what they are.Open it →

Worth knowing at this level

Watch for questions answered quickly and wrongly. At this level the most common lost mark is not a gap in knowledge but an answer given before the question was finished.

Common questions

What changes between Year 3 and Year 5?
Length and layers. Reading passages get longer, numeracy questions take more than one step, and the wrong answers are written to catch a plausible mistake rather than a careless one.
Does Year 5 NAPLAN affect selective school entry?
No. Opportunity Class and selective high school placement use their own tests, sat separately. NAPLAN results play no part in either.
How should we use the practice papers?
Start with single-topic sets to find where the marks are going, then move to a full-length paper under time once the weak spots have had attention. Doing full papers first tends to produce a score without a diagnosis.

Practise the whole thing

A free account opens the full Year 5 papers — single-topic sets for working on one weakness at a time, and full-length papers for a timed run. Everything is marked, and every question has a worked solution.
