Year 5 NAPLAN numeracy practice

By Year 5 the questions carry more than one step, and the hardest part is often deciding what to do first. Fractions, decimals and measurement start turning up in the same question, and a child who is fluent with each one separately can still be caught out when they arrive together.

What the section covers

Number
Place value, counting patterns, the four operations, fractions of a shape or a group.
Algebra
Continuing a pattern, finding the missing term, describing the rule behind a sequence.
Measurement
Length, mass, capacity and time — reading scales and clocks, comparing, choosing sensible units.
Space and geometry
Naming 2D shapes and 3D objects by their properties, symmetry, position and direction.
Statistics and probability
Reading picture graphs and column graphs, answering questions from a table, how likely something is.
