Year 3 NAPLAN numeracy practice

Numeracy in Year 3 is less about hard arithmetic than about reading a question carefully and knowing which idea it is asking for. A child who can count by fours may still stall when the same pattern arrives as a row of apples in a picture. The practice below is arranged the way the test is: short questions, one idea each, mixed together so that nothing is predictable.

What the section covers

Number
Place value, counting patterns, addition and subtraction, simple multiplication and division, fractions of a shape or a group.
Algebra
Continuing and describing patterns, finding the missing term, working out the rule behind a sequence.
Measurement
Length, mass, capacity and time — reading scales and clocks, comparing and ordering, choosing sensible units.
Geometry
Naming 2D shapes and 3D objects by their properties, symmetry, position and simple directions.
Statistics and probability
Reading picture graphs and column graphs, answering questions from a table, saying how likely something is.
