Year 3 NAPLAN conventions of language practice
This section asks a child to notice things they usually do without thinking — where a capital letter belongs, which word is spelt wrongly, whether a sentence sounds right. Most children lose marks here not from ignorance but from reading too quickly, which is exactly what practice fixes.
What the section covers
- Spelling
- Finding the misspelt word in a sentence, and spelling words that sound alike but are written differently.
- Grammar
- Nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns, subject–verb agreement, tense, simple and compound sentences.
- Punctuation
- Full stops, question marks, capital letters, commas in lists, apostrophes for ownership.
- Word choice
- Choosing the word that fits the sentence, and telling apart words that are close in meaning.
